PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Elster EK220 Gas Volume Converter

The EK220 is a battery-operated volume converter. The device records the low frequency operating volume pulses of a gas meter, measures the operating pressure and temperature of the gas and calculates the compressibility K as well as the conversion factor C. The standard volumes, standard flow rates and operating flow rates can be calculated using this initial data.

In addition to volume conversion and data logging, the EK220 may be used for the flexible data recording of different measurements and, in conjunction with either a modem or RTU, for system monitoring.

  • T, PT, PTZ volume conversion
  • Conforms to European standard EN 12405
  • MID approval
  • Compressibility calculated in accordance with different methods
  • Flexible, integrated data logging function
  • High accuracy
  • Mains-free operation
  • Suitable for use in Zone 1 hazardous areas
  • Three digital inputs
  • Four freely programmable, sealable digital outputs
  • Various communication protocols
    • IEC 62056-21
    • Modbus
    • IDOM
  • Optical interface for parameterisation and readout (IEC 62056-21)
  • Integrated serial interface can be used as RS232 or RS422/RS485

Applications

  • Volume conversion for billing purposes.
  • Data logging for different applications.
  • Monitoring of measurement values and station functions: two additional digital inputs can record signals from regulator safety shut-off valves, differential pressure switches in filters or a door contact; the events are archived and can be sent by SMS or e-mail through a connected modem.

Sensors and calculation

  • Absolute pressure sensor ENVEC CT30, integrated in the housing or external; ranges 0.7–2, 0.8–5, 1.4–7, 2–10, 2.4–12, 4–20, 6–30, 8–40, 14–70 and 16–80 bar. A version without a pressure sensor works as a temperature conversion device (T) with a fixed pressure configured at commissioning.
  • Pt-500 temperature sensor (Pt-1000 optional) to DIN 60751, protective tube 50 mm long, Ø6 mm, 2.5 m cable.
  • Compressibility calculated according to S-GERG 88, AGA 8 DC, AGA 8 (GC1 or GC2), AGA NX-19, AGA NX-19 following Herning & Wolowsky, or fixed.

Archives and logbooks

  • Archives: 2 monthly, 1 daily, 1 measurement, 1 process data archive and 4 additional flexible archives (content, recording interval and triggering events selectable).
  • Event logbook (500 records), change logbook (audit trail, 200 records) and certification data log (50 records).

Inputs/outputs, communication and installation

  • 3 digital inputs (LF pulses from the gas meter, message signals such as a manipulation contact); 4 freely programmable, sealable transistor outputs (volume pulses, alarm/warning status).
  • Optical interface to IEC 62056-21 for parameterisation and readout; the internal serial interface can be used as RS232 or RS422/RS485; protocols IEC 62056-21, Modbus ASCII/RTU/TCP, IDOM and SMS.
  • Cast aluminium housing for wall or meter mounting; 4-button keypad, 2-line display; an additional battery can double the service life, or use an external 5–10 V DC supply.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about CAD-FL-151

How do the EK220 T, PT and PTZ conversions differ?

All three convert gas volume to standard conditions. T corrects temperature only (fixed pressure, version without a pressure sensor); PT corrects pressure and temperature; PTZ also applies the compressibility factor Z, calculated by methods such as S-GERG 88, AGA 8 or AGA NX-19. MID approvals: PTZ under PTB 002, T under PTB 003.

Which gas meters can the EK220 work with?

The EK220 records the low-frequency (LF) volume pulses of a gas meter at a digital input, measures the gas pressure and temperature and calculates the standard volume. For example the TRZ2 turbine gas meter has LF pulse outputs; send the meter details and CAD will confirm the configuration.

Can the EK220 be used in hazardous areas and outdoors?

Yes: it is battery-operated with Ex ia certification for Zone 1 (ATEX II 2 G Ex ia [ia] IIC T4 with Elster battery 73015774, or IECEx with battery 73020663), IP66, ambient temperature -25 to +55 °C.

How does the EK220 send data to a monitoring system?

Through the IEC 62056-21 optical interface or the RS232/RS422/RS485 serial interface with IEC 62056-21, Modbus ASCII/RTU/TCP or IDOM protocols; with a modem it can also send alarms by SMS or e-mail.

What do I send to get a quote for the EK220?

Send the conversion type (T/PT/PTZ), operating pressure, the gas meter used, communication protocol and accessories. CAD quotes within 24 working hours.
