PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
CWT Butterfly Valve
When the handwheel or lever is operated, the motion is transmitted through the shaft and opens the butterfly disc.
For a lever-operated butterfly valve, a 90-degree turn opens the valve, with the lever then parallel to the pipe. If the lever is perpendicular to the pipe, the valve is open
- Advantages
- Butterfly valves have many advantages, which is why they are so common in plant piping today.
- The compact design needs less space than other valve types such as globe and gate valves.
- Butterfly valves are generally cheaper than other industrial valves, because the design needs less material. The cheapest type on the market is the wafer butterfly valve, fitted between two flanges.
- Quick, easy opening and closing
- Simpler, easier maintenance
- Light weight.
- Low pressure drop and high pressure recovery.
- Disadvantages:
- Only performs well in low-pressure service. At high pressure the valve is easily damaged and over time becomes prone to leakage.
- Butterfly valves are limited when throttling between 30 and 80 degrees open.

- Industrial applications of butterfly valves
Concentric or low-pressure, low-temperature butterfly valves and high-performance butterfly valves cover a wide range of applications. These include:
- Cooling water, air, gas and similar applications, such as fire protection and circulating water
- Corrosive services requiring lined valves
- Food, chemical and pharmaceutical processing
- Slurry and similar services
- Steam and high-pressure, high-temperature applications
- Throttling applications with low differential pressure, such as water supply or cooling air systems
- Valve coding
To make classifying and ordering valves easier, CWT, drawing on many years of experience, has optimized and assigned codes to its valves and each valve accessory according to CWT’s standard as follows:

Choosing the type from the CWT catalogue
The CWT “Butterfly Valve” catalogue has three groups. The valve code is built from these fields: valve type, size, pressure, construction, ends, body material, trim material, seat material and operator.
| Type | Characteristics per manufacturer | Seat |
|---|---|---|
| Concentric | Simple structure, good flow regulating function, bi-directional sealing; the shaft and disc are on the valve centreline and the rubber seat is squeezed by the disc edge as it turns. | Soft (PTFE, RTFE, Viton, EPDM) |
| Double offset | The disc moves away from the seat quickly when opening, which reduces friction; the catalogue has a flanged type. | Per the catalogue’s seat codes |
| Triple offset | Three offsets let the disc leave the seat as it opens, reducing friction and prolonging valve life; anti-blowout shaft and fire safe design; flanged and butt welded types. | Metal: multi-layer (fire safe), combined metal and soft, or stainless steel / overlay |
Size, pressure and operation
- ASME Class 150, 300 and 600 (the triple offset flanged type has all three classes by size).
- Sizes in the code system: NPS 2 to 42; the specification on this page states NPS 2 to 36.
- Ends: flanged RF / FF / RTJ, butt weld (BW), lug and wafer.
- Operation: lever, gear, bare stem (for an actuator), handwheel, electric, pneumatic, hydraulic or solenoid. The catalogue tables use a gear operator from NPS 6 up.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about CAD-FL-111
Which types of CWT butterfly valve are there?
Three: concentric (soft seat), double offset and triple offset (metal seat, fire safe design). Each comes in several sizes, Class 150, 300 and 600 ratings and operator choices.
When should I choose a triple offset butterfly valve?
When you need a metal seat for higher temperature and pressure: the manufacturer states the triple offset design reduces friction between disc and seat, with an anti-blowout shaft and fire safe design. Tell CAD the medium and temperature so we can choose correctly.
Can a CWT butterfly valve take an electric or pneumatic actuator?
Yes. The manufacturer's code system includes electric, pneumatic, hydraulic and solenoid operators, as well as gear, handwheel, lever and bare stem for an actuator.
Where does CWT make its butterfly valves?
CWT Valve Industries Inc. is based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada according to the manufacturer's catalogue.
What do I need to send for a CWT butterfly valve quote?
Valve type, NPS size, Class, ends, materials, medium, temperature, pressure and operator. CAD replies within 24 working hours.
