Application
The KI-PD detects extremely small particles of combustion and
triggers an alarm at the first sign of smoke. Thanks to its high
performance forward-scattering reflective response technology,
the photoelectric smoke sensor responds quickly and reliably to
a wide range of fire types, espe cially slow burning fires fuelled by
combustibles typically found in modern multi-use buildings.
Compatibility
The KI-PD detector is compatible with Kidde VS and VM series
panels
Compatibility and bases
According to the Kidde datasheet, the KI-PD is compatible with Kidde VS and VM series panels. Some features may not be supported by every control system; check the panel’s installation and operation guide. The detector needs a separate mounting base:
| Code | Description |
|---|---|
| KI-SB / KI-SB4 | Standard base (KI-SB4: 4-inch base with GSA-TS4 trim skirt); supports the GSA-LED remote LED |
| KI-RB / KI-RB4 | Base with relay (dry contact 1 A pilot duty @ 30 VDC; normally open or closed selected at installation) |
| KI-IB / KI-IB4 | Base with a built-in line fault isolator for Class A circuits |
| KI-ABST | Sounder base for fire (smoke and heat) detectors |
| KI-ABLT | 520 Hz low-frequency sounder base for fire and CO detectors |
| KI-ABDT | Sounder base for fire and CO detectors when used with a GSA-T3T4 temporal pattern generator |
| GSA-LED | Remote alarm LED (connects to the KI-SB or KI-SB4 only; not for EN 54 applications) |
| GSA-TS4 / GSA-TS | Trim skirt (supplied with 4-inch bases; GSA-TS ordered separately to hide surface imperfections) |
| GSA-DMP | Detector mounting plate |
Installation
- Bases mount to North American 1-gang boxes, 3-1/2 or 4 inch octagon boxes 38 mm (1-1/2 inch) deep, and European BESA and 1-gang boxes with 60.3 mm fixing centres; the KI-SB4, KI-RB4 and KI-IB4 also mount to 4 inch square boxes.
- Wiring terminals are accessible from the room side and accept 18, 16, 14 and 12 AWG wire (0.75 – 2.5 mm²); 18 and 16 AWG are preferred.
- Wall mounting: maximum 305 mm (12 in.) from the ceiling. Air velocity 0 to 20 m/s (0 to 4,000 ft/min).
Operating conditions, standards and cautions
- Operating environment 0 to 49 °C (0 – 93% RH, non-condensing); storage -20 to 60 °C; shipping weight about 0.16 kg.
- Agency listings per the datasheet: CAN/ULC-S529, UL 268, UL 268A. In Canada install according to CAN/ULC-S524, CSA C22.1 and the local authority.
- The detector does not operate without power and does not sense fires where smoke cannot reach it; photoelectric detectors are best suited to slow, smouldering fires.
- A sensitivity report can be printed to satisfy NFPA sensitivity measurements (end of the first year and every two years thereafter).
Information to send with a quote request
So that CAD can quote within 24 working hours, please send:
- The Kidde panel in use or planned (VS or VM series) and the number of addresses on the loop.
- The number of KI-PD detectors and the bases needed (standard, relay, isolator, sounder).
- Accessories: GSA-LED remote LED, detector tester (Testifire), mounting plate.
- Any approvals or certificates the project requires (for example UL, EN 54, local fire-department certificates).

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about CAD-SF-440
Which fire panels is the Kidde KI-PD smoke detector compatible with?
According to the Kidde datasheet the KI-PD is compatible with Kidde VS and VM series panels. Some features depend on the panel; check the panel guide or send the panel model so CAD can confirm.
Which base does the KI-PD need, and are there sounder or relay bases?
The KI-PD needs a separate base: KI-SB/KI-SB4 (standard), KI-RB/KI-RB4 (relay), KI-IB/KI-IB4 (fault isolator, Class A circuits) and the KI-ABST, KI-ABLT and KI-ABDT sounder bases. See the bases table above.
What kind of fire is the KI-PD best at detecting?
It is a forward-scattering photoelectric detector that senses extremely small particles of combustion at the first sign of smoke and responds quickly to a wide range of fire types, especially slow-burning fires fuelled by combustibles typical of modern multi-use buildings. Smoke sensitivity range 0.53 to 3.94 %/ft (1.7 to 12.35 %/m).
What approvals does the KI-PD have?
The datasheet lists CAN/ULC-S529, UL 268 and UL 268A; it does not list EN 54. If your project requires EN 54 or another approval, send an enquiry and CAD will confirm with the manufacturer.
What do I send to get a quote for the KI-PD?
Send the Kidde panel series, number of detectors, bases and accessories, and any approvals required. CAD quotes within 24 working hours.
