ToxiRAE Pro Family

The ToxiRAE Pro is a gas detector that can detect a wide range of gases, from carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide and oxygen to ammonia, chlorine and formaldehyde. It stores calibration data, so users can monitor one toxic gas one day and a different gas the next simply by swapping the sensor in the ToxiRAE Pro.

Choosing the sensor and range

According to the manufacturer’s data sheet (DS-1064-11), the ToxiRAE Pro uses intelligent electrochemical sensors that store calibration data, so a sensor can be swapped to monitor a different gas the next day. Main ranges (resolution in brackets):

• NH3 0-100 ppm (1 ppm); CO 0-500 ppm (1 ppm) or 0-2,000 ppm (10 ppm); Cl2 0-50 ppm (0.1 ppm); ClO2 0-1 ppm (0.03 ppm).
• H2S 0-100 ppm (0.1 ppm) or 0-1,000 ppm (1 ppm); SO2 0-20 ppm (0.1 ppm); NO2 0-20 ppm (0.1 ppm); NO 0-250 ppm (0.5 ppm).
• O2 0-30% Vol. (0.1%); PH3 0-20 ppm (0.1 ppm); HCN 0-50 ppm (0.5 ppm); H2 0-1,000 ppm (10 ppm); HCHO 0-10 ppm (0.05 ppm).
• Ethylene oxide has three ranges (0-100, 0-10 and 0-500 ppm); methyl mercaptan 0-10 ppm.

Operation and safety

• Diffusion sampling; graphical LCD with backlight; readings in ppm or mg/m3 with STEL, TWA and peak values; two buttons.
• Alarms: audible 95 dB at 30 cm, vibration, flashing red LEDs and on-screen indication; Man Down with pre-alarm and real-time remote notification (wireless version).
• Continuous datalogging with a three-month capacity at one-minute intervals; configurable interval from 1 to 3,600 seconds; data download through the charging cradle and PC cable.
• Rechargeable Li-ion battery, over 30 hours of operation (non-wireless), recharge in under 4 hours.
• 118 x 60 x 30 mm, 220 g; IP-65; -20 to +55 °C; humidity 0 to 95% non-condensing.
• Manual calibration or automatic with the AutoRAE 2 system (the manufacturer states “contact Honeywell RAE Systems for availability”); the manufacturer recommends calibrating the sensors on installation.

Wireless and approvals

The wireless version uses a licence-free ISM-band RF modem and connects to the ProRAE Guardian system or an EchoView Host closed-loop network; typical range is about 200 m to a mesh router or EchoView Host and about 100 m to a RAELink3 modem. Wireless and non-wireless are separate configurations; a non-wireless unit cannot be upgraded.
