PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Kromschröder ZMI Pilot Burner

Pilot burner with a single ignition electrode, combined with an IFS / IFD or PFS / PFD automatic burner control unit

The ZMI pilot burner is suitable for many applications in the iron and steel, ceramics and non-ferrous metal industries and on heat treatment equipment. The ZMI can also be used as a stand-alone burner. Suitable for operation with natural gas, town gas or LPG.

  • The pilot burner is ignited electrically and monitored by a single ignition and ionization electrode
  • The ZMIC 28 with a ceramic head produces a longer, sharper flame. The ceramic tube has a long service life and suits high-temperature applications.
  • Safe flame control by ionization electrode
  • Reliable electrical ignition
  • Slim, space-saving design thanks to single-electrode operation
  • Can be used in many applications
  • Capacity: 1 to 4 kW (ZMI 16: 1 to 2 kW; ZMI 25: 2.5 to 4 kW; ZMIC: 2.5 to 4.2 kW)
  • Gas type: natural gas, town gas or LPG
  • Burner tube length: 150 to 1000 mm
  • Gas inlet pressure: ZMI 15 to 70 mbar; ZMIC max. 100 mbar
  • Air inlet pressure: ZMI 15 to 90 mbar; ZMIC max. 120 mbar

Applications

According to Kromschröder, the ZMI pilot burner is for safely igniting gas burners on furnaces in the metal, ceramics and non-ferrous metal industries and on heat treatment installations. The ZMI can also be used as an independently operated burner. The pilot burner is ignited electronically and monitored by a single electrode (ionisation control).

Choosing the burner

Type Capacity Flame length Notes
ZMI 16 1 – 2 kW approx. 4 cm Metal flame tube
ZMI 25 2.5 – 4 kW approx. 6 cm Metal flame tube
ZMIC 28 2.5 – 4.2 kW approx. 10 cm SiC ceramic flame tube, longer and sharper flame, suited to higher temperatures

Type code

  • Gas letter: B = natural gas, G = LPG, D = coke oven gas / town gas.
  • Flame tube length: ZMI from 200 mm in 100 mm steps (150 mm also available); ZMIC 28 from 300 mm; ZMIC 28..K with bellows unit from 400 mm in 50 mm steps.
  • Thread: R = Rp internal thread, N = NPT internal thread (ZMIC is R only).
  • The manufacturer’s order example: ZMI 16B200R.

Installation and supply

  • Position the pilot burner so that reliable ignition of the main burner is guaranteed; the burner tip can be set exactly using the moveable burner bracket.
  • Install pressure regulators and adjusting cocks in the gas and air lines upstream of the burner; for maximum flame stability the gas and air pressures of the ZMI or ZMIC must be higher than the connection pressure of the main burner. The manufacturer recommends filters in the gas and air circuits to protect the nozzles.
  • When a ZMI is installed in a burner block its tip is under very high thermal stress, so cooling air must always pass through the 3 mm gap on the outside of the flame tube. For a ZMIC in a burner block the manufacturer recommends the version with bellows unit and about 140 mm of insulation around the ceramic tube.
  • The tip of the flame tube must not come into contact with the main burner flame.

Standards

The ZMI and ZMIC comply with the requirements of EN 746-2 and the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, as confirmed by the manufacturer’s Declaration of Incorporation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about CAD-TH-212

How do the ZMI 16, ZMI 25 and ZMIC 28 pilot burners differ?

The ZMI 16 is 1–2 kW with a flame of about 4 cm; the ZMI 25 is 2.5–4 kW, about 6 cm; the ZMIC 28 is 2.5–4.2 kW, about 10 cm, with a SiC ceramic flame tube that suits higher temperatures such as installation in a burner block.

How is the ZMI type code read?

For example ZMI 16B200R: ZMI size 16, natural gas (B), 200 mm flame tube, Rp internal thread (R). G means LPG, D coke oven / town gas, N an NPT thread, K the version with bellows unit (ZMIC).

Can the ZMI be used stand-alone, and what ignites it?

It can be used as a pilot for a main burner or operated independently. It is ignited electronically by a single electrode and monitored by ionisation control through an automatic burner control unit (for example IFS/IFD or PFS/PFD).

What should I watch when installing a ZMI in a burner block?

Cooling air must flow continuously through the 3 mm gap around the flame tube because the tip sees very high temperatures; for a ZMIC choose the version with bellows unit and about 140 mm of insulation. The tip must not touch the main flame.

What do I send to get a quote for the ZMI pilot burner?

Send the type (ZMI 16/25, ZMIC 28), gas type, tube length, thread, how it will be fitted and the burner control used. CAD quotes within 24 working hours.
